Album Cover Art Competition

Young artists (25 years of age and under) living in Waterloo Region were invited to submit a proposal for an original artwork for the cover of the album Songs of Kitchener. Songs of Kitchener is a compilation album of the community compositions created during Mary Abdel-Malek Neil’s 2019 City of Kitchener Artist in Residency. The community compositions (songs) that are a part of this album will be streamed online for public consumption.

Themes explored in the Songs of Kitchener album include group, neighbourhood, and city-wide identity, as well as sense of place and community. The commissioned artist will be responsible for developing artistic content to illustrate the themes of the Songs of Kitchener album for digital streaming platforms. The artist will receive $100.00 as an honorarium for their artwork.

Jury

Selection of the successful proposal will be made by a combination of musicians involved in the recording of the Songs of Kitchener album, a Kitchener Public Library staff and a Kitchener Public Library volunteer.

Submissions will be assessed for responsiveness to the subject matter, relevance, and representation of the community and the songs within the Songs of Kitchener album.

Timeline

  • Deadline for submissions: April 30, 2021
  • Selection of winning proposal: May 31, 2021
  • Final design files submission (if required): June 11, 2021

Artist Honorarium

The artist will receive $100 as an honorarium for the winning artwork. The honorarium is inclusive of the final design file submission and reproduction rights as described under Reproduction and Moral Rights below.

 

Mary Abdel-Malek Neil and Kitchener Public Library reserve the right to terminate the competition at any stage. In such a case, appropriate notifications would be made as necessary. Incomplete and/or late submissions will not be considered.

Reproduction and Moral Rights

The winning artist agrees to give Mary Abdel-Malek Neil permission to exhibit their artwork in relation to the album, on music digital streaming platforms, library website, social media sites and other relevant venues (print or online), for non-commercial purposes. The artist understands that in all cases, they will be identified as the artist. The artist agrees to allow for very minor modifications subject to formatting of the artwork with prior agreement of the artist.

Personal information supplied as part of the Songs of Kitchener album art competition process will be used by Mary Abdel-Malek Neil and Kitchener Public Library according to the requirements under Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA), in order to contact you regarding your entry. Your personal information may be shared with the competition jury as part of the submission evaluation process.
